Final races to start close to the beach

Travemuender Woche - Final races to start close to the beach
TRAVEMUENDE, GERMANY-(24-7-2005) The ISAF set the route and the 116th Travemuende Week followed the advice first in Germany. Tuesday (26 July) will see the first ever final races to be held in the Tornado, 49er and 29er class. Only the best six of each competition are qualified. And the race course will be located close to the beach so that the sailing fans on shore can watch the finals easily. `We have made up our mind very early to go the new way`, explained race chairman Walter Mielke, `and we are excited to see how it all works.` The final race will be not longer than approximately 10 to 15 minutes. The last in each race will be eliminated until only three boats left. Those will sail as much fleet races as necessary before the first competitor earned two wins.

`This is the future of sailing`, said four times Olympian Roland Gäbler, `we are looking forward to it.` For Gäbler and his crew Gunnar Struckmann from Kiel the new format means they still can hope for an overall victory in Travemuende. After eight fleet races done on Monday (25 July) they turned out only third seven points behind Kirilyuk/Ushkov (Russia), who lead two points ahead of Style/Vials (Great Britain). Whilst two times world champions Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess (Germany) missed only one point to be unbeatable with one more race to go the fight for silver in the international German 505 Championships is tight. Three crews scoring 24 points with Germans Lehmann/Schöler and Kellner/Stammerjohann and US boys Hamlin/Lewis.
